The 8 Degrees Story

How can we make the chocolate industry work better for the farmers, artisans, and business people who sustain it?

Brendan, our founder and Director of Operations, asked just that question in 2019 when he launched 8 Degrees. Having managed a B2B chocolate business in Portland, OR, he knew that small-to-medium size bean-to-bar makers, chocolatiers, and food manufacturers had limited bulk chocolate options: MOQs for custom-made chocolate were just too high. They needed accessible bespoke products made with ethically-sourced ingredients.

8 Degrees, a business designed to strike a balance, had found its niche: large enough to deliver consistent volume, but intimate enough to design custom recipes catered to smaller clients.

Why build a chocolate factory in Washington's lovely Skagit Valley? Practical and personal reasons abound. Burlington is nestled between Seattle and the substantial ports of Tacoma and Vancouver, BC,  so beans and other ingredients arrive right on our doorstep; the greater Seattle chocolate community is one of the most nurturing in the world; and, perhaps most importantly, the gorgeous Chuckanut mountains are a perfect place to hike and for Brendan to indulge his life-long passion for cycling. It doesn't hurt that we like beer, coffee, and seafood almost as much as chocolate.
